Summary: | 碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 跨領域藝術研究所 === 101 === The Blue-White-Red tricolor video art project is a collaborative project between the author and residents from a military dependants’ village located in Kaohsiung’s Zuoying District. Inspired by new genre public art, the project aims to help residents of the Mingde Jianye military dependents’ village take part in public debates and issues, such as the preservation of their culture.
With the help of local activists, the author held workshops and taught residents to record their lives through visual imagery. The attempt is mutually beneficial: residents are able to learn new skills in cultural preservation and the author is able enrich his own professional experience.
The theme of the Blue-White-Red tricolor video art project relates to the tricolor flag of the Republic of China, Taiwan. Blue resembles order, white stands for terror and red for parental love. Video clips in the art project are organized into the aforementioned sections. One of the breakthroughs made during the course of the study was getting residents to speak about the White Terror Period and their discontent towards the government’s plan to relocate and rebuild the sites.
Mass military dependents’ villages were built in 1949 to accommodate soldiers and their families retreating from Mainland China. The villages have significant historical and architectural value. The government’s plan to reconstruct the villages in 2013, however, has impacted the future prospects of these sites. In the post military dependents’ village era, discussions about how to revitalize the area have become increasingly important.
The author has been working in the television news media for several years. Through various workshops, the author is able to interact with local residents and create a series of videos. The video art projects are not only about a single event per se, such as the idea of a digital archive, but bringing together various perspectives.
