Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 成人教育研究所 === 101 === Study on Funeral Service Providers’ Custom Attitude of Gender Equity Abstract This study probed into funeral service providers’ attitude toward gender equity in the service. Semi-structural qualitative method was adopted. In-depth interviews were conducted on 6 funeral service providers and related researchers, in order to collect data. The data were further analyzed. Conclusions are shown below: 1. With the enthusiasm, funeral service providers play the roles as psychological counselors and educate the public. 2. Traditional funerals are flexible without fixed procedures; they are usually religious and judged by the amount of money spent. 3. Funeral rites are gradually simplified and the levels are enhanced; funeral service providers have the common consensus to establish consistent rites. 4. Gender difference in funerals is originated from male chauvinism in patriarchal society in the time of agriculture. . 5. In funerals of Taiwan, some rites aim to respect women. In recent years, funerals turn to gender equity and in funerals, sometimes women can replace the positions of males. More women dominate the funeral rites. 6. The main motives to enhance gender equity of funeral service providers are urbanization and fewer children. Females’ average life span is longer than that of males; thus, there are more female elders than males. In some situations, female elders can dominate the funeral rites. 7. Funeral service providers can accept the thought of gender equity; however, they are passive in actions. The families of the deceased might misunderstand their professionalism or assistance. Without the agreement of the families, they do not carelessly change the procedures because of gender equity. According to research conclusions above, this paper proposes the following suggestions: 1. Suggestions for funeral service providers (1) Regarding conflict between new and old cultures, in funeral rites, they should concern about flexibility for the cases. (2) Arrangement of the funeral rites should be based on the families of the deceased. Funeral service providers should avoid the custom of traditional male chauvinism. (3) Funeral service providers handle funerals for the deceased and avoid the unnecessary religious rites. (4) Implementation of gender equity in organizations. 2. Suggestions for governmental institutions (1) Governmental units should educate the public through brochures. (2) Governmental units should communicate with funeral service providers through seminars. 3. Suggestions for future research Researchers can design questionnaires to conduct questionnaire surveys on the content of Equity, Independence and Funeral Rites: Modern People’s Ceremonies published by the Ministry of the Interior. The subjects can include funeral service providers and families of the deceased. The researchers can explore funeral service providers’ attitude, measure and adjustment regarding non-religious funerals. Keywords: funeral service providers, gender equity, custom attitude
