The biggest difference between Chinese and Japanese emotional expressions is on the personal limitation. This is also one of the difficulties for Taiwanese Japanese learners when learning Japanese emotional expression. However, problems existed on the personal limitations regarding to Japanese emotional expression. None detailed illustration was stated on the concepts of personal limitations and adjective classifications in Japanese textbooks. For this study, it mainly examined the personal limitations regarding to affective adjectives. It is hoped that this investigation could help Taiwanese Japanese learners clearly understand the personal limitations regarding to affective adjectives and the limitations’ removal.
In order to clearly understand the personal limitations regarding to affective adjectives and the limitations’ removal, first of all, three classificatory criteria were demonstrated according to previous literature. Affective adjectives then were selected from “Gendai Keiyoshi Yoho Jiten” and “Yong-yan Jie-gou Fen-lei Jiten”. These affective adjectives, from Old Level One to Old Level Four, were reclassified according to vocabulary meaning, sentence function, and syntax category. Second, literary forms such as dialogues, novels and modalities (e.g., darou, rashii, etc.) were used as the foundations when examining the personal limitations among affective adjectives and the limitations’ removal. Third, in order to investigate Taiwanese Japanese learners’ comprehension on affective adjectives and personal limitations, college students in the third- and fourth-year were selected as participants in this study. A set of questionnaire was adopted as the tool of instrument.
The results of the study indicated that learners could not correctly identify emotional adjectives although they understood them. In addition, learners could not completely judge them even though they had read the descriptions of affective adjectives. Furthermore, many problems existed on the concept of personal limitations. Difficulties still existed on the comprehension of third person’s emotional expression specifically under the usage situations of subordinating conjunctions and past tenses.
It is hoped that this study, by examining the personal limitations regarding affective adjectives, can contribute to Taiwanese Japanese learners acquiring affective adjectives and personal limitations.
