The proverb can be said to be one of the literature most closely related to human life and fully demonstrates the unique popular culture of each country. For those who learn a second foreign language but cannot understand the significance of its proverbs, he is not only unable to grasp the hidden idea of the people behind the language, but also cannot deeply understand the culture of the country. I hope to make a statistic analysis and study on the number proverbs in China and Japan.
The paper consists of the following structure. The first chapter is preface, including the research motive, objective, scope, methodsand prior study. The second chapter elaborates the definitions of Japanese and Chinese proverbs and clarifies the scope of confusing idioms and story idioms. The third chapter collects the meaning and use cases of the Sino-Japanese numbers and analyzes the rate of utilization of each number in the proverbs of the two countries. (the proverbs used in this chapter are elected from the Japanese proverb dictionary "Story&Custom Proverbs Dictionary" and the Chinese proverb dictionary "Chinese Proverb Chi".) It also further understands whether the numbers closely related to people’s daily life reflect the meaning and composition of the proverbs by studying Sino-Japanese preferences on numbers. The fourth chapter is divided into the origin and purpose of the questionnaire survey and the analysis of survey results. It mainly targets Japanese learners working in 50 Japanese companies and surveys their use of proverbs, understanding as well as learning intention. The fifth chapter is the conclusion.
It is hoped that the findings of this paper will be helpful for the learners who are interested in Japanese and Chinese proverbs and they can deeper understand Sino-Japanese culture. It is also expected that the research can make Japanese learners improve their understanding of the conversation and use of the proverbs when communicating with Japanese people.
