The banana peel is usually served as an agricultural waste, on king of feeds. Reports showed that banana peel mainly possessed polysaccharides, catecholamines and sitosterol. Triterpenes were also reported, but seldom. After concentration the banana peel extract was dispersed in H2O, then, subsequently chromatographed on Diaion HP-20 column, silica gel comlumn, and sephadex LH-20 to yield 16 compounds, which were identified as twelve cycloartane type triterpenoids, cycloeucalenone (B1), cyclomusalenone (B2), 4-epicycloeucalenone (B3), 4-epicyclomusalenone (B4), 24-methylenepollinastanone (B5), 28-nor- cyclomusalenone (B6), 3-epicycloeucalenol (B7), 3-epicyclomusalenol (B8), cycloeucalenol (B9), cyclomusalenol (B10), 24-methylencycloartenol (B11), cyclolaudenol (B12), two sitosterol :β-sitosterol (B13), stigmasterol (B14), and two aromatic esters, dibutyl phthalate (B15) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (B16). Among those compounds, B9, B11, B12, B15 and B16 were first isolated from the M.. sapientum L. The isolated compounds were also evaluated for anti-NO production and DPPH radical scavenging, however, they didn’t show the promising. Vernonia cinerea L. (Compositae) is an annual herb which is used medicinally for a variety of purposes, including reducing fever, and promoting digestion. Previous investigations have shown that crude extracts of V. cinerea L. possess anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial activities. By a series of chromatography and bioassay-directed fractionation, twelve hirsutinolide-type sesquiterpene lactones including, four new compounds, 8R-tigloyloxyhirsutinolide-13-O- acetate (V1) and vernolide-K~M (V2~V4), and eight known , vernolide-B (V5), 8α-(2-methylacryloyloxy)-1β,4β-epoxy-1α-methoxy-13-O-acetate- 10βH-germacra-5E,7(11)-dien-12,6-olide (V6), 8α-tiglogloxy-hirsutinolide (V7), 8α-(2-methylacryloyloxy)-hirsutinolide-13-O-acetate (V8), 8α-tigloyloxy-hirsutinolide-13-O-acetate (V9), hirsutinolide-13-O-acetate (V10), 8α-(2-methylacryloyloxy)-hirsutinolide (V11), vernolide-A (V12) , together with four apocarotenoid; (+)-dehydrovomifoliol (V13), loliolide (V14), 3β-hydroxy-5,6-epoxy-7-megastigmen-9-one (V15) , 3α-hydroxy- 5,6- epoxy-7-megastigmen-9-one (V16) were isolated from MeOH and EtOAc extracts of V. cinerea L. The anti-inflammatory activity of V1 to V16 using NO production assay by LPS induced RAW264.7 macrophages showed that V1, V4, V5, V6, V8 and V9 (IC50 <1 μM) had potent inhibit NO activities. These results indicated that the bioactive isolates from V. cinerea L. could be served as lead compounds for the development of anti-inflammatory drug.
