Summary: | 碩士 === 南華大學 === 自然醫學研究所 === 101 === Background: Taiwan had already entered the so-called "aging society" in 1993. Aging is an unavoidable fact of life and a long healthy life expectancy is the goal of gerontology. In other words, not only a longer life expectancy is desirable butmust be accompanied by a good quality of life. To achieve this goal, one must practice “health preservation”. Mr. Ting-dong Cao, the author of “Lao Lao Heng Yan”, although suffered from tuberculosis during his childhood, was able to live until 85 years old, which could be considered longevity at his time. His unique method of health preservation could be served as a basis for senior citizens of today.
Aim: To explore the regimen of porridge and dietary compatibility and incompatibility from the “Lao Lao Heng Yan –Lasting Words in Gerontology” for health preservation in today’s elderly people.
Methods: Based on the Encyclopedia of Chinese Traditional Medicine, a content analysis of the dietary compatibility and incompatibility described in the “Lao Lao Heng Yan- Lasting Words in Gerontology” was conducted. In addition, recent gerotology-related medical literature on modern day health preservation was examined. All materials were further collated and discussed.
Results: In this study, the theories of aging from the modern Western and Chinese medicine were collated. The theory of Yin-Yang and Five Elements in Chinese medicine, interrelationships between organs and body functions, and the Five Flavors were interpreted. One hundred types of porridge described by Ting-dong Cao were tabulated and classified according to the four seasons and Chinese body constitution. In addition, 215 kinds of medicinal and edible Chinese medicines were tabulated based on the Food and Drug Administration, Department of Health, Taiwan.
Conclusions: A detailed literature review and analysis of “Lao Lao Heng Yan- Lasting Words in Gerontology” was carried out. The results could be served as a reference for dietary compatibility and incompatibility as well as health preservation for today’s senior citizens.
