Abstract
This study focused on the process of a teacher using picture books to teach five-year old children about emotion, the changes of the children’s emotional competence and this teacher’s professional growth through the process. Three research questions of this study were: (1) What is the process of using picture books in the teaching of emotion? (2) What are the impacts resulted from integration of picture books into children’s emotional expression and regulation? And (3) What is the teacher’s professional growth from this action study?The research participants were students and teachers from a kindergarten class at an elementary school in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Eight picture books had been used and twenty-one lessons related to the books were implemented.The findings of this study were summarized in three points. First of all,Three stages of the process and reflection on the process were found in this study. Secondly, reading picture books enhanced children’s competence of emotional expression and regulation. Thirdly, the teacher significantly increased the effects of teaching if she could read and analyze books in depth in advance. In addition, understanding the children’s family backgrounds and family members’ interaction experience helped the teachers to provide appropriate emotional counseling.
From this study, four recommendations could be drawn for the future research and practice: (1) It is worth putting emotional education into wider practice in kindergartens. (2) The use of picture books can be tailored toward meeting teaching goals and can thus be used multiple times. (3) Future research can explore the influences of teaching emotion on teachers’ professional development. (4) Future research can further investigate the effects of parents and teachers’ cooperation on children’s emotional education.Keywords: Kindergarten、emotional education, picture book, action research
