The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, independent-sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient , Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and multiple regression. The results of this study indicated:(1)Speech impairment, employment status, level of education ,living situations, diagnosis, cancer stages and different treatments were significantly correlated.(2)Body image, living situations, diagnosis and different treatments were significantly correlated.(3)Social adjustment, employment status, level of education, marital status, diagnosis and the duration of disease were significantly correlated. Speech impairment, body image were negatively related to social adjustment.(4)Depression,living situations, dianosis and duration of disease were significantly correlated.(5)Speech impairment, body image were positively related to depression. Social adjustment was negatively related to depression.(6)The significant predictors of social adustment were employment status and depression. The significant predictors of depression were living situations, duration of disease, speech impairment, body image and social adjustment. The study found that the relationship among speech impairment, body image, social adjustment, and depression does exist in head and neck cancer patients, This study provides the information to health care professionals the importance to early detect head and neck cancer patients’ psychosocial status and supply adequate care, thereby improving head and neck cancer patients’ physical, psychological, social status, and their life quality. This was a cross-sectional study. In this study, the convenience sampling was used. Instruments included demographic and medical characteristic questionnaire, Speech Handicap Index(SHI), Body Image Scale(BIS), Social Adaptation Self-Evaluation Scale(SASS), Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale(CES-D).
Total of 181 subjects were recruited from the radiation-oncology outpatient clinic of a medical center in Taipei city.
The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, independent-sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, Spearman’s rank
correlation coefficient , Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and multiple regression.
