An experimental design with two groups and pre-post tests was applied. Inclusion criteria for study subjects were military inpatients who were diagnosed as adjustment disorders in a military hospital in Taipei. The eligible subjects were randomly assigned to either experimental group or control group. In the end, sixteen subjects in experimental group and twenty subjects in control group completed the study. The experimental group received 40 minutes assertive training each section, two section a week and lasting for 4 weeks, while the control group received health education about stress management and relaxation skills with a schedule as in the experimental group. The research instruments included “personal data sheet”, “military stress inventory”, “perceived stress scale”, “Tennessee self concept scale”, “symptom checklist 90R”, “Beck depression inventory”, “Beck axiety inventory”. The statistic methods included X2 test, independent t-test and one way ANCOVA” The results showed that the improved scores of total self-concept, psychological self-concept, moral and ethical self-concept, family self-concept, social self-concept, total psychosomatic symptoms, global severity index, total depressive scores and total anxiety scores subscores in the experimental group were larger than those in the control group. In physical self-concept and positive symptom distress index subscales, threshold values for showing therapeutic effect were noticed. However, the score of academic/work self-concept, positive symptom total in the experimental group were not significant different from the control group. This sudy supported that assertive training can improve self-concept, and psychosomatic manifestations as well as depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms on soldiers with adjustment disorders. This study suggested that assertive training is an effective nursing intervention for improving the psychosocial adaptation in military inpatients with adjustment disorders.
