The major research questions are the followings: how can the activation of indigenous musical instruments in contemporary diverse fields be exhibited, since they have been deeply buried among documents and records over a long period of time? Could primary schools be employed as a platform to do this? How could indigenous musical instruments be used to develop indigenous cultural education? How could a music education model be constructed through indigenous cultures? By means of participant observation, in-depth interview, and triangulation together with a comparison between indigenous musical instrument teaching in Chung Deh Primary School and Wen Lan Primary School, both of which are in Sioulin Township, Hualien County, this study has discovered that one of the best solutions relies on the integration of educational administrative resources so that tribal manpower can bring indigenous musical expertise into primary schools’ official curricula through team teaching. By doing so, indigenous musical instruments will be liberated from their auxiliary role of solely accompanying dances and can further establish their cultural subjectivity. This will enable the scheme to further take root and even continue the culture of musical instruments at the stage of grade school. As a music educator and an aborigine, the author wishes, via this study, to fight against the decline of tribal heritage, and to provide some suggestions for those who intend to promote indigenous music education.
