Our previous research indicated that ether triggers ROS production and ethylene biosynthetic genes and defense gene expression in tomato. We discovered that ether activates different ethylene synthetic gene members through different signaling pathways. We applied similar experiments on Arabidopsis, and discovered that although ether triggers the sequential production of O2- and H2O2 in Arabidopsis as it does in tomato, the production of O2- and H2O2 and temporal expression patterns of hormone biosynthetic genes in Arabidopsis were different from those in tomato. In gene expression assays, we found that ether triggers expression of ethylene (ET), salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonate (JA) biosynthetic genes in Arabidopsis. Induction of the ET and SA biosynthetic genes were through similar signaling pathways including both phosphorylation and dephosphorylation. In conclusion, we discovered that plants have different strategies to respond to the same abiotic stress, and each species possesses its own unique signaling pathways that regulate the responding process.
