Dining Experience of Indonesian Muslim Students in Taiwan

碩士 === 國立嘉義大學 === 觀光休閒管理研究所 === 101 === The purpose of the study was to understand the dining experiences of Indonesian Muslim graduate students in Taiwan using hermeneutic phenomenology. This study first obtained dimensions and measurements from literature to develop interview questions and then conducted in-depth interviews to gather information. Following the procedures suggested in the thematic phenomenology, the researcher was able to analyze the text recorded and converted from the interviews step by step. The results showed that in the cognitive aspect, most Indonesian Muslim students had little cognition of Taiwanese food before they came to Taiwan but the cognition was improved after living in Taiwan for a certain period of time. Moreover, in the affective aspect, Taiwanese food was not a prescription against homesickness for Indonesian Muslim students but an experience reminding them more of their homemade food. Finally, in the behavioral aspect, the language barrier and cultural differences were the reasons decreasing the chance of learning the Taiwanese food culture. This research explores the reasons bringing about different dining experiences of people from different culture such as Muslim students from Indonesia while studying in Taiwan. Important suggestions and implications were offered in the end for the government and the industry accordingly in order to explore the potential Muslim market in Taiwan for tourism development.
