Regeneration-The Discourse on
Shih – Kai Cheng’s Creation of Ceramic Sculpture
Art and creativity are a source of healing and consolation for both oneself and one’s family. In my art I take the concepts of the internal organs and pathology as the starting point for creating works of art which are profound and also evoke a sense of tranquility.
This paper consists of five chapters. In Chapter 1 I explain the motivation and aim of this research, the methodology used, as well as its scope and limitations. In Chapter 2 I discuss the theoretical background of this research, including the concepts of sublimation, personality development, and the relationship between the psyche and behavior; I also consider the process by which the suffering of illness can be transformed into creative energy. In Chapter 3 I discuss my artistic style and how it has evolved from the theme of “resistance” to that of illness and the internal organs; also covered are the blending of abstract and concrete symbols, as well as the qualities of glaze and clay. In Chapter 4 I discuss each work individually. In Chapter 5 I conclude by reflecting on what I have learned in conducting this study and considering what the future may have in store for my creative endeavors.
This research has five goals: (1) To make a systematic re-evaluation of illness, pharmaceuticals, and values; (2)To use mixed media and the organic form and structure of the body to develop my individual artistic vocabulary; and (3) To use the creative process based on memory and reflection on illness to reconsider how we think about the family history of illness.
In this research I use both theoretical analysis and the action research methodology to examine the ceramics I produced between 2009 and 2013, in terms of form, concept, technique, and style.
Keywords: ceramics; self-healing
