碩士 === 國立嘉義大學 === 音樂學系 === 101 === Francis Poulenc（1899-1963）was a French composer in the 20th century. He is also a member of Lex Six. His musical style has a merit and joyful characteristic as oppose to the atonal music which was very popular at that time. His music has a spirit of Neoclassicism of the 20 century, also poses some elements of French Pop music. His musical style is very friendly and approachable. The paper will explore about the life of Poulenc, his background and his times to understand the style of his music. Poulenc created thirty-four piano works; most of them are short and delicate. Among these, Quinze Improvisations pour Piano is a special one, and it took him thirty years to finish. In this paper, the author will discuss Poulenc’s piano works in terms of compositional methods and musical styles, and address his opinions on the interpretation. This paper discusses Poulenc’s work and is organized in the following sections: Section I introduces Poulenc’s background and the influence of his times to his piano works, so that we can further understand the distinguishing features of his fifteen Quinze Improvisations pour piano. Section II studies Poulenc’s piano work and his musical style to have a deeper understanding and an interpretation of his music. Section III analyzes and interprets this work. There will be a research and a discussion on the structure, harmony, melody, tonality, rhythm of his piano works. Section IV summarizes and concludes.
