However, employees with disabilities often leave their positions because of adjustment issues at work environment. Some researchers had reported that persons with disabilities more than often met some interpersonal problems that make them resign from jobs. Researchers suggested that if persons with disabilities can keep well relationship with their supervisors, a long tenure in the work may be achieved. In this study, the process of building relationships between persons with physical disabilities and their supervisors were investigated. The research results may have important implications for professionals when helping persons with disabilities to maintain their positions. In this study, we used in-depth interview to collect data from six persons that have worked in their current positions for more than three years in Taiwan. The major results show that: (1) Two major categories that affect the relationships of persons with physical disabilities and their supervisors were found. One is the disability related-factor category, the other is the general-factor category; (2) For developing beginning relationship, factors such as “disadvantaged image’’, “to query the ability”, “Fear of causing trouble others” belong to the disability related-factor category. General-factor category includes “gender”, “knew each other before come in workplace”, “capability to work”; (3) For developing lone term relationship, disability factors includes “refuse of another person kindness”, “concerns about joining the outdoor activities”. General factor include “advanced work ability”, “common interests”, “gender”; (4) Three process stages of building relationship between persons with physical disabilities and their supervisors were found. A. Stage 1: only work relationship. B. Stage 2: having more personal interactions in workplace and C. Stage 3: having more personal interactions out of office, including their families. The implications for persons with disabilities, vocational rehabilitation professionals based on research results are indicated and discussed. Suggestions for future studies are also provided.
