碩士 === 國立暨南國際大學 === 外國語文學系 === 101 === This thesis aims to argue that Cormac McCarthy’s The Road is a deeply engaged response to the concepts of nothingness, death, language and Dasein. Death and nothingness are not only the background of the novel, but also echo the philosophical idea of Heidegger and existentialists. With the description of the background of nothingness, the end of the world, the idea of the totality of Dasein can be shown. Through the analysis of relation among the father, the son and the world, the thesis concludes that speaking is the way of caring, which fulfill the totality of Dasein in the novel.
