Through different periods, these campuses have developed different styles of architectures of its time, including the faculty accommodation. In this research, the NCKU faculty accommodation is used as a case study to understand the spatial transformation trend between the period of 1931 and 1972. By studying the records and files of the faculty accommodation of NCKU, this research attempts to reorganize and analyze the phenomenon that lead to the transformation. The transformation history could be divided into four parts, namely the Japanese Colonization period, Post-war period, American Assistance period and Post-American Assistance period. This research not only provides an individual analysis of spaces of each period, but also uses “Space syntax” as principle methodology to develop a series of objective and scientific system to realize the transformation of space structure and form of the faculty accommodation. Two aspects of the overall spatial design have been found from this research. Firstly, in the aspect of overall spatial attribute, as a result of cultural difference, the dormitory entrance has changed from an internal, enclosed space to become an external porch-like area. The waiting area for visitors has also been transformed from an individual reading room into an attached space in the living room. Also, specialized room such as store room spaces have reduced into “single-function” and“regular-use” of spaces, the space for storage has been decreased over the years. With respect to the overall spatial structure, “Engawa” (Veranda/corridor) plays a crucial role of inter-spatial links between individual rooms during the Japanese Colonize period’s building. However for the aspect of American Assistance period, living room became the focus of the overall spatial structure design, while placing all the other spatial units as secondary consideration. Similar spatial structure is also seen in the Post-American Assistance Period. One particular distinction that marks out the Post-American types is the development of storied-building in response to the university’s policy of maximizing the campus land usage. In this research, the NCKU faculty accommodation is used as a case study to understand the spatial transformation trend between the period of 1931 and 1972.
