Though earthquakes cannot be predicted exactly at present, the huge property damage and loss of life by earthquakes can be reduced with emergency preparedness planning and effective rescue operations. In this study, “Taiwan Earthquake Loss Estimation System (TELES)” which is developed by National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE), was used in this study to analyze the damage patterns in Tainan City caused by the Hsinhua Fault. In the recent history, the Hsinhua Fault ruptured in 1736 and 1946(ML=6.1). In this study, we assumed two different earthquake events for Richter Magnitude Scale 6.1, and 6.5 to stimulate the earthquake disasters. Our study reveals that if an earthquake occurs in Hsinhua Fault again, the buildings may be destroyed seriously in the area of Yongkang district, East district, Xinhua district, Guiren district, Rende district, Annan district, North district, Xinshi district, West Central district and South district. Besides, lots of people may be injured or killed by the earthquake, mainly in the area of Yongkang district, East district, North district, Xinhua district, West Central district, Annan district and Rende district. These results can be explained that because these districts are closed to Hsinhua Fault zone and these districts have a high population density and the expansion of buildings. Moreover, the ground under these areas is quite soft, and this situation may amplify ground shaking. To sum up, these findings reported in this study have demonstrated that TELES can be practically used for earthquake disasters prevention or rescue operating system of the local or central governments.
