Summary: | 碩士 === 國立中興大學 === 獸醫學系暨研究所 === 101 === Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a major problem in dairy farms and can cause considerable financial losses of dairy industry. Viral infection could probably be the main causes of BRD, including bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR). BVD and IBR are associated with severe pneumonia and diarrhea in calves and abortion problem in adult cattle. There is still no official survey about the prevalence of BVD and IBR in Taiwan. The aim of this survey was to investigate the prevalence of BVD and IBR in dairy cattle in Taiwan. According to the result of this survey, all of the antigen detection result of BVD and IBR from nasal swab samples and blood samples in calves were negative. There were 387 bulk tank milk samples randomly collected from dairy herds, and the result of ELISA examination revealed the antibody prevalence of BVD and IBR were 46.5% (181/387) and 97.4% (377/387), respectively. The result of BVD antigen detection from the same tank milk samples by RT-PCR was 5.7% (22/387). A total of 276 serum samples from 4 farms were consecutively collected in which 2 were positive and 2 negative farms examined with BVD antigen by RT-PCR, respectively. There were 2 BVD positive cattle with BVD antigen ELISA test, and the nest-PCR result of IBR was 12.3% (34/276). In accordance with the results of this survey, BVD is very common in Taiwan. We suggest that long period surveillance and preventive measures such as quarantine and vaccination are necessary to reduce the disease impact and financial losses in herds.
