With the rapid development in Taichung, construction of sewage systems becomes one of the priorities for the administrative program. Most of the Taichung area in Taiwan is located onto a gravel stratum which is composed of large amount of big and hard gravels leading to the difficulties in sewage construction. This thesis is focused on analyzing the cost, time schedule, geological configuration, and machine appropriacy in overcoming difficulties described above during sewage construction. The main pipe jacking method is usually employed to the sewer pipeline project because the wide pipe diameter can overcome geological obstructions. However, the geological obstruction makes it become a problem for the construction of submain sewage through the similar method. Due to the design differences, reduced pipe caliber, less experience of contractors, and unexpected geological situations, the main pipe jacking method may cause the increase in machine attrition rate and cost, and the delay in excavation and construction progresses in submain sewer construction. The aim of this study is focused on analyzing several of the sewer pipeline projects to improve the problems encountered in the Taichung area gravel stratum during sewer construction. After systematic comparisons and analyses, we provide further information and suggestions based on the accumulated experience in sewer pipeline construction and sewage design in Taichung.
