It is pointed out in recent literature that magnesium lithospermate B (MLB), the major soluble ingredient of danshen, possess inhibitory activity on Na+/K+-ATPase, and therefore the purification of MLB and its acidic form (lithospermic acid B, LSB)becomes an important issue. However the purification process of MLB reported in literature is time-consuming and expensive. In this study, we developed a simple and rapid method without chromatographic means to obtain LSB in large quantity and high purity through controlling pH value and phase separation. The quantitative analysis of LSB was performed by high-performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC).
