However, for most construction firms, the cost estimating processes are still using the excel-based system. The goal of this study is to develop a cost estimate system based on Google Sketchup 3D models. A Web based Material Quantity - Building Information Modeling (WMQ-BIM) was developed in this reaserch. The WMQ-BIM can quickly construct 3D geometric by using 12 predefined objects such as Floor, Wall, Plate, Window, Door, Stair, Surface, Beam, and Column. The functions of the 12 objects are developed as plugins with the program Ruby. The information regarding the volume, surface, unit of the whole building can be extracted instantly to generate cost estimate data. A real project is used to verify the function of the WMQ-BIM. The strengths and weaknesses of the WMQ-BIM are elaborated. The WMQ-BIM has shown significant value. The WMQ-BIM has also added-value that allows the owners to vision-exam the 3D models.
