Summary: | 碩士 === 國立政治大學 === 宗教研究所 === 101 === The origin of I-Kuan-Tao’s Pao-Kuang division has been traced back to 1941, when Pan Hua-Ling took leadership of Pao-Kuang temple at Shaanxi Road in Shanghai. Pan Hua-Ling donated majority of his property and material possessions to the temple, and through this act of generosity, protected and propagated Tao. More and more people followed Pan Hua-Ling and he became canonized as Sunyo (樞紐) of five provinces (Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Fukien, Guangdong, and Taiwan). When Zhang Tian-Ran reached enlightenment in 1947, Sun Hui-Ming took lead of the Heavenly Mandate, but several false patriarchs and prophets appeared to contest her legitimacy. In order to recognize the legitimate from the illegitimate, Sun Hui-Ming ordered every I-Kuan Tao division to come bear witness; those divisions which were honorable through their integrity were conferred an official name (串金線定盤根). Sun Hui-Ming gave Pan Hua-Ling the name of Pao-Kuang division “Zhen-Li-Tian-Dao” (真理天道). In September of that year, Chen Wen-Xiang came to Shanghai to accept this name (盤根). Chen Wen-Xiang was the first man to preach and propagate Tao in Taiwan. Sun Hui-Ming designated him to be Sunyo (樞紐) of Taiwan and was given the sworn duty to take care of I-Kuan-Tao’s followers.
This research is based on interviews to discuss the experiences during 1946-1988. Before 1987, the religion was not legal in Taiwan, the process of preach had much difficulties and banned. Although Chen Wen-Xiang experienced much suffering and was imprisoned, he had foundation for Pao-Kuang division.
In 1988, Huang Shi-Yan took lead of the Heavenly Mandate from Chen Wen-Xiang and the temple underwent great changes and challenges, yet she endured disgrace and insult in order to accomplish the mission. Chen Jun-Long and Weng Sung-Ching protected the Heavenly Mandate by helping Huang Shi-Yan preach and propagate Tao. Together they made personal sacrifices and struggled for Tao and the temple prospered. This research is based on interviews to show the development of the six units truly and of the temple in every city in Taiwan, and the history behind the temple.
Why do Pao-Kuang-Chong-Zheng’s followers have such a strong mission to propagate Tao? What are the basic teachings that influence them? Pao-Kuang-Chong-Zheng’s followers constantly innovate the ways in which they propagate Tao, such as preaching testimony on television, teaching elementary school children about Confucian scriptures and holy sutras, and visiting followers to let others join in temple activities or receive Tao. Such continuous activity brings liveliness to the temple.
