The objectives include learning the historical background as well as such characteristics as structure and shape of Chinese characters, analyzing the techniques used in character forming cases, as well as the expressive styles of Chinese character posters, and then applying them to creative works. In themes, the commencement and development of Taiwan Hokkien songs in the 1930s and the characteristics of the works of Deng Yu-Xian were explored; and finally, through the interaction between Chinese characters and songs, this study hopes to present more diverse poster themes. By collecting data on the history, structure and strokes of Chinese characters and comparing character formation cases, the study concludes that Chinese characters present unique “stroke” visual patterns with their exclusive characteristics of sound, shape and meaning, so the character formation techniques and stroke connection of Chinese characters are very important. The study subsequently defined the following seven types of character forming methods: shape replacing strokes, shape composing strokes, shape plus character, decomposing strokes, character composing shape, borrowing strokes and character innovation. In Chinese character posters, “shape plus character” is most often used, followed by “shape replacing strokes”. In addition, the Hokkien songs in the 1930s can be deemed to have set off the development of the pop music market and brought significant influence to the music styles of later generations. The songs of Deng Yu-Xian have soothed people’s soul and are still being played today. His works are popular and easy to remember, and seem to be releasing a ray of hope in suppression. In the poster design, darker colors were used to echo with the characteristics of his works. The Chinese characters that can best express the artistic conception of the songs were selected via listening to songs and analyzing their lyrics, and then the above character forming methods were applied to strengthen the interpretation of the artistic conception of the songs, which eventually hope to bring viewers deeper situational experience through the marriage between songs and Chinese characters.
