Owing to the subtle nuances amongst these four conditional sentences in terms of meaning, the modality constraints accordingly emerge at the end of the sentence. It is an recurrent issue that perplexes learners of Japanese when it comes to word choice. Following the logic, this research focused on learners of Japanese’s use of “to, ba, tara, nara” in Japanese conditionals, investigating their acquisition state and their learning difficulties by the test paper. Based upon the accuracy rate and the self-confidence scale, the findings of this present study were summarized as follows: (1) Seniors did acquire the “ba” type Japanese conditionals, and “nara” type Japanese conditionals in a certain extent, but they somewhat lacked linguistic confidence in “nara” type Japanese conditional. On the other hand, they did not thoroughly acquire the “to” and “tara” type Japanese conditionals. (2) Juniors did acquire the “ba” type Japanese conditional. And sophomores did acquire the “ba” type Japanese conditional in a certain extent, but sophomores somewhat lacked linguistic confidence. On the other hand, they did not thoroughly acquire the “to”, “nara” and “tara” type Japanese conditionals.
