Summary: | 碩士 === 義守大學 === 醫務管理學系 === 101 === A survey of the Department of Health, Executive Yuan in 2010 showed 24.6% of the hospitals indicated that it was very difficult in recruiting nursing staff while 47.1% expressed that it was difficult in doing so. Even though there are 14,000 new nursing graduates per year, hospitals still faced nursing shortage problems and vacancy rate of 5.8%. Is this status caused by the low nursing graduates’ willingness to be clinical nurses? Therefore, the purpose of this research is to investigate the influential factors in the nursing students’ willingness of occupation selection.
There are four factors—personal characteristics, trait, career development, and type in this research. A purposive sampling is taken to cover students of nursing departments of the universities in central and southern Taiwan in the academic year of 2012 with 213 effective samples.
The result showed that 72.8% of students will select clinical nursing activity as their occupation. Nursing students degree program, work opportunity, family economic status and personality trait (such as openness to experience and neuroticism) significantly affected on the occupational selection. However, academic records, nursing ability, and practical experiences did not affect the occupational select significantly. Besides, the investigation on nursing competence found that some students admit that they are incompetent in research and care ability.
This study suggests that nursing education can enhance instruction to improve the competence of nursing students in order to gear the clinical work. In addition, this research recommends that universities may provide the courses of interpersonal relationship and communication, emotional control and management for the students who are neurotic personality. By participating in group courses and promoting knowledge ability, it may raise their resistance to ambient pressure and calm their anxiety in nursing practice. Their willing of entering nursing field could be raised. Equally, clinical nursing practice can be adjusted to those who incline to openness to experience. Hospitals may enhance nursing autonomy. Once nursing staff have a sky to fly, they may satisfy the nursing practice. Accordingly, the change in work situation would be attractive to people whose personality incline to openness to experience.
