While under the influence of the climate of each region and its culture, food culture has been formed in the region. If you look at the food culture of today in the world, there are some ways to eat: i.e. by hands, chopsticks, a fork, a spoon, and a knife. Currently, the countries where people use the chopsticks to the daily diet gather in East Asia. Japan and Taiwan are also included of course. Chopsticks are one of the food cultures both in Japan and in Taiwan. While not only chopsticks but spoons played a major role in eating in Taiwan, Japanese people mainly use chopsticks only. They use chopsticks even when they eat soup. Japan is the only country in which people carry the bowl to their mouth while they eat soup. Also Japanese people and Taiwanese people use chopsticks in different ways. For example, it is allowed in Taiwan to pass foods from chopsticks to chopsticks, but it is not good in Japan. Chopsticks culture of Taiwan and Japan are different in many ways, and such taboos are not generally known to Taiwanese people. There is a possibility that when a Japanese and a Taiwanese are in the same table, they will misunderstand each other. In this thesis, I discussed about historical and cultural differences of about chopsticks between Taiwan and Japan, and made an investigation on the chopsticks culture for young Taiwanese people.
