In the literature, we found that chronic psychiatric patients have three common phenomenon in their work performance: low employment rate, low wages and low working class; and even if they find a work with low wages, but can’t sustained for a period of time because which payment can’t meet their basic needs for living.
Purpose
To study the predicament of work adaptation and arrangement of chronic psychiatric patients through exploring their work experiences, and further to look for solutions.
Methods
Utilize the semi-structured conversations of qualitative in-depth interview. All the contents in the conversation were recorded with MP3 recorder, and were thereupon transcribed verbatim, which finally were analyzed by qualitative analysis.
Results
In the study, we discovered the causes of short career and poor stability in chronic psychiatrics, which include three aspects:
(1) Employer: Chronic psychiatric patients not only apt to be good self-complacency, but could not precisely catch on the appraisal and feedback from their employer, which compel the employer to adjust their business amount; further to affect the atmosphere of equality in work environment.
(2) Colleague: The work experience of chronic psychiatric patients suggested that interpersonal relationship with colleague have quite influence on their work performance. Namely, their partner with better tolerance and emotion control could facilitate stability in career of them.
(3) Policy: Not only the related subsidy and welfare were both insufficient, but poor category in their job seeking and insufficient classified education and vocational training.
Conclusions
The problems and corresponding suggestions of this study include: Besides the regulation of hiring a ratio of disabled person, we need much more measures of rewarding and subsidy, to create a much more diverse and friendly work environment. Additionally, we need hold classified education as soon as possible, which could facilitate the adaptation. Secondly, we need much more diverse welfare policy and administrative measures, to facilitate the work motivation and stability of chronic psychiatric patients. Furthermore, in the aspect of employer and colleague, most of the main predicament came from the lack of appropriate values and money management, resulting shorter career span and higher demission rate. More than they have unrealistic expectation about the rewards. We might suggest providing work support continuously and guidance in work place or community-based rehabilitation service systems, to facilitate the successful rate of employment stability and sustainability.
