The study aimed to discuss the coping strategies and further suggestions to deal the occupational stress of the public health nurses in the public health centers owing to their insufficiency of clinic experiences and nursing techniques of home health care. The purpose of this study was to (1) investigate the difficulties and the occupational stress of the public care nurses engaged in home health care, (2) explore the relation between the background of the public care nurses and their perception of stress from work, (3) examine how well the public care nurses deal with the stress from home health care, and (4) provide concrete suggestions to the authorities concerned. Qualitative research method was employed in this study. Semi-structured depth interviews and literature review were conducted to analyze the subjects. This study sampled 5 subjects from public health centers in a remote area, a mountainous area, a metropolitan area and an ordinary area. The relation between the occupational stress of the public health care nurses engaged in home health care and the coping strategies were derived from the results of the data analysis. The results show: 1. Home health care conflicts health service. 2. The nursing techniques of the public health care nurses are problematic. 3. There are insufficient supports from the workplace. 4. The public health care nurses lack confidence when working independently. 5. The registered professional nurses of clinic home health care should be specifically in charge of the service. In line with the above, the following proposals are made for the authorities concerned to elevate the level of community health care: (1) have sufficient professional nursing staff, (2) organize more in-service training programs of professional nursing techniques, and (3) assign a specific person to take charge of home heal care.
