| Summary: | 碩士 === 玄奘大學 === 應用外語學系碩士班 === 101 === Words of negation in Chinese are among the adverbs, which comprise：「bu4」、「mei2」 、「meiyou23」、「wu2」、「wei4」、「mo4」、「bie2」、「fei1」、「weibi 44」、「xiu1」and「wu4」.These words constitute negation in sentences.If two such words appear in a single sentence, it forms a case of double negation.
Double negation is one of the emphatic devices to stress importance or force in statement, question, etc.. It is also used euphemistically to soften the tone of speech. Although a double negation is a logical affirmation, different words of negation are habitually paired together for semantic variations in expression, which also create structural conflicts in sentence formation.
The double negations that will be discussed in this paper are such pairs as:「meiyou23＋bu4」、「meiyou23＋bu shr24」、「bu shr24＋bu4」、「bu shr24＋meiyou23」、「bu4＋modal verbs＋bu4」and「bu4＋modal verbs＋meiyou23」these six to be explored.
A“question tag” is an emphatic device to be attached to a declarative and interrogative sentence to form a rhetorical question, which is among the most commonly used discourse strategy in our daily life. When a “double negative” and a “question tag” come along together, they will produce the explicit and implicit semantic effects at both syntactic and pragmatic levels. So this study attempts to provide some insights as to how such questions should be practically handled by way of recommendations for references for teaching the related topics.
