Summary:碩士 === 華梵大學 === 美術學系碩士班 === 102 === In the early 1960s when the wave of Pop Art had spread all over the world, Robert Indiana(1928-) made himself popular among the artists in New York with the series of The American Dream. Long having paid attention to American issues which were the resources of creating, he turned the American specialties into the elements of letters, figures, symbols and geometric shapes, and combined vividly colorful arrangement to form the dazzling visual vocabulary. Not only did Indiana directly show the title of the work on its surface, but he also developed the pure subjects of letters and figures, such as “LOVE”, which he invented brand-new art style much adored by the crowd. However, distinguished American specialties are, in fact, luxurious decorations of the private intention within the artist. Those letters, figures, symbols, shapes and colors are encoded to reveal the memories of Indiana’s childhood. The words which look simple and literal actually conceal complex and ambiguous meanings. This thesis applies the method of document analyzing, through the aspects of the individual history and the art history, to investigate the meanings of letters and figures in Indiana’s creations, and then intends to re-discuss the status of Indiana in the art history as well as his uniqueness and significance in Pop Art. Furthermore, from the angle of psychoanalysis, probing into the results of works which reflecting the psychological factors provoked by the experiences during Indiana’s growth, and attempting to expose the true emotions behind the creation of Indiana.
