While most businesses in Taiwan are suffering the recession caused by the global financial crisis, only the tourism stands out by its rapid growth. The visitors to Taiwan in 2011 were more than 6.08 million while the overall tourism revenue reached NT$ 550 billion. Thus tourism is said to be the next trillion dollar industry. The purpose of this study was to investigate the various factors which affect the operating efficiency of international tourist hotels so as to provide the relevant suggestions for policy and operating decisions of our international tourist hotel industry. The approach taken in this study was Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) which measured the managerial efficiency of the tourist hotels and determined the effects on operational efficiency and the dimensions of the regression analysis for hotel operators to improve the efficiency, on a practical basis, as well as for the reference of the relevant researchers in this study. Statistical analysis showed that during 2002 to 2011, the hotels that achieved higher ratios in the assessment of the average technical efficiency are: Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Grand Hyatt Taipei, Regent Taipei, and Astar Hotel. Apart from Astar Hotel, all hotels are located in Taipei city center with convenient transportation, many guest rooms, high room rates, and the average occupancy rate more than 70%. To cater the increasing demands of the tourist market, the larger hotels have greater capacity and more resources to achieve higher operating efficiency. The key factor to determine the room revenue and food and beverage revenue of the local international hotels is mainly the hotel staff, staff in the housekeeping department and in the food and beverage department. The total floor space of food and beverage department is comparatively less important. So the employees are the most important factor involved to generate the revenue.
