Among it, collection classification, one of the items in registration work, serves as the first step of appreciation of the collection and systematization of the knowledge. It not only examines whether the collections meets the demand of collection policy, but also reflects the way how the museum sees its collections and further influences collection utilization. All above mentioned demonstrates the multiple meanings of collection classification in museums.
In addition, in regard of medical museums, they have had a long history and kept flourishing until now in the West, whereas in Taiwan, many medical museums have been established one after another in the past decade as well. However, due to the limited knowledge of medical museums, this research intends to analyze the types and collection features of medical museums by exploring the history and current development and focusing on the collection and collections classification of several medical museums in Taiwan and the U.K. It hoped that the general public can therefore have a better understanding of medical museums.
This research is a case study of the Museum of Medical Humanities at National Taiwan University by introducing its general development. Furthermore, with emphasis on the collection policy and the collections classification, the study tries to establish the appropriate collections classification system for the museum, and examines the direction and content of its collections. It’s terminate purpose is to provide the advises of planning the collections classification, direction and content of the collections for the museum in the future.
