However, the Russian musician, Sergei Rachmaninoff chose to inherit the composition technique of Romanticism. Written in 1901, the Sonata for Violoncello and Piano in G Minor, Op.19 was Rachmaninoff’s only sonata for cello and piano. This thesis discusses Rachmaninoff’s Sonata for Violoncello and Piano in G Minor, Op. 19. The author would concentrate on the performance practice of this work through investigating Rachmaninoff’s life and the background of the composition. Furthermore, through analyzing the context of this sonata, the author will have a broader understanding of this work and thus have better interpretation in performance.
