I-Kuan Tao's view on life and death – a review of the age of Zhang Tianran (a period of 1930~1947)

碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 宗教學系 === 101 === I-Kuan Tao is a popular private religion in China before the construction of Chinese Communists’ political power in early years of the Republic of China. After Taiwan restoration in 1945, I-Kuan Tao was introduced in Taiwan. At the beginning, it was regarded as an evil cult and banned by the government. It finally became the legal religion in Taiwan in 1987 after the lifting of the prohibition and turned into significant religious sect in the religious market of Taiwan. With the development and effect of I-Kuan Tao, academic importance has been attached to the study of I-Kuan Tao. According to past research findings, although the studies in Taiwan or China suggest the religious doctrines, they mostly describe them and fail to present an overall analysis on the content, not to mention the concepts of life and death in the religion. Since the issues of life and death are the main reasons of the existence of religion, studies that lack the exploration on life and death in religious doctrines will not demonstrate religious attitude and measure toward palliative care of life. In order to recognize the thoughts and wisdom of I-Kuan Tao in the issues of life and death, this study focuses on the view of life and death of I-Kuan Tao. By literature review and collection, analysis and review of literatures on I-Kuan Tao, this study suggests the theoretical framework of life and death in the religion, and further indicates related content in the religious doctrines. As to research content, first, from the origin of universe and life, this study probes into the cosmic view of I-Kuan Tao. Through analysis on real lives, it develops the view of life in I-Kuan Tao. Finally, by discussion of death and after death, this study demonstrates the importance of transcendence and the meaning in the religion. This study finds that the view of life and death in I-Kuan Tao is based on the relief of Yuan Fo-tzu to the heaven, which is the reason that I-Kuan Tao followers actively promote the doctrines. This study intends to draw the academia’s attention on religious doctrines of I-Kuan Tao, and allow future studies to approach the argumentations of I-Kuan Tao.
