Taiwan is an island where there is high humidity and plenty of rain. Deteriorations such as wall cancer, efflorescence (or flowering), corrosion and moulds are frequent, causing degradation of living quality. The conditions can be as moderate as degenerated appearance or as serious as compromised structure integrity. In traditional waterproofing works, materials used tend to have limits in terms of working environment. The bonding strength and waterproofing performance of traditional waterproofing materials deteriorate or even fade away under the exposure of weathers over time. In light of this, “water-based crystalline waterproofing materials (WBWMs)” were investigated. The application was analyzed for strengths and waterproofing performance based on strength tests and water permeability tests.
The following are the results of improvement on concrete strengths, surface strengths, homogeneity and waterproofing performance based on WBWMs:
(1) Compression strength: the compression test performed proved that the WBWMs had positive effects on compression strength, which increased with the age of agent used. The effects on strength stabilized at the age of 28 days.
(2) Surface strength: the surface strength of all three specimens sprayed with different agents after rebounded hummer test was significantly higher than that of those without being sprayed with agents.
(3) Homogeneity: the comparison of surface strength in terms of average strength, range and standard deviation after rebounded hammer test showed no distinctive difference in three specimens; i.e. no significant difference in the homogeneity of surface strength was observed in the three different ways of agent application.
(4) Surface strength at each of test points on specimens using different ways of spraying: ANOVA analysis showed that the F value was 0.040, far smaller than 3 (the F value at the level of significance of 5%). Therefore, no distinctive difference was observed in the surface strength of the three specimens sprayed using different ways.
(5) Waterproofing performance: the water permeability tests proved improvement of the waterproofing performance in the specimens sprayed with test agents by 17~51%. Also observed was that the waterproofing performance increased with the age of agents.
