Lin (2003) pointed out that the best solution to the energy and living space problem of top floor of the building is roof insulation as it can effectively prevent the generation of heat and thus affecting the comfort of indoor environment and air conditioning power consumption. The significance of roof insulation to the improvement of indoor environment is apparent. To discuss the heat insulation efficiency after the renovation of the roof insulation of “Taiwan Sustainable Campus Project”, this study sampled 4 roof insulation structures in three schools of Taichung City. Short term continuous measurement was conducted on the site by applying the on-site measurement method. The measurement data were analyzed using SPSS software for descriptive statistics and independent sample t-test. The research conclusions are as follow: 1. The structure of roof insulation can be divided into two types, including roof garden and aluminum-zinc corrugated steel. The insulation with roof garden has the roof surface cooling effect. However, the roof surface temperature of the building with aluminum-zinc corrugated steel insulation is even higher than the house without roof insulation. 2. The structure of roof insulation can be divided into two types including roof garden and aluminum-zinc corrugated steel. Both types of insulation have a significant cooling effect on top floor’s roof surface temperature. 3. The structure of roof insulation can be divided into two types including roof garden and aluminum-zinc corrugated steel. Both types of insulation have a significant cooling effect on top floor’s indoor temperature. 4. Regarding heat insulation efficiency of having or having no roof insulation, this study conducted a comparative study of the experimental group and the control group, and found that the cooling effect of roof surface and top floor ceiling is the best in the case of Chaoyang University of Technology and the cooling effect of top floor indoor temperature is the best in the case of Shuangwen High School. 5. Compared with the average outside air temperature, the top floor indoor average temperatures of the experimental groups of various samples are all lower than the outside air temperature, indicating the roof insulation on the rooftop of the building can achieve the cooling effect of the top floor.
