It adopts the methods of reviewing literatures and interviewing craftsmen. Interview subjects include three craftsmen who work on temples, houses and historic building restoration, among which the craftsman who works on temples is selected as the study spindle and the craftsmen who work on houses and historic building restoration are selected as supplementary, expecting to take this opportunity to review historical materials relevant to traditional carpentry tools and modern machinery, and be helpful to the preservation and restoration of cultural heritages. This study focuses on four aspects of argument: I. The historical origin of traditional carpentry tools. The history and development of all kinds of traditional carpentry tools are sorted out from literatures. It firstly describes the generation and evolution of tools, then introduces the development of carpentry tools in China and finally discusses the replacement and transformation of modern carpentry tools. II. Types, names (common names), usages of carpentry tools and manual tools of craftsmen. It explores the classification, names as well as common names, usages of various kinds of carpentry tools, and tools made by craftsmen themselves according to their actual demands. III. Using methods, operating skills and maintenance of carpentry tools. It explores using methods, operating skills and maintenance of carpentry tools. IV. Analysis and exploration on traditional carpentry tools and modern equipment. Based on information obtained from interview and literatures, their consumption time, operating methods and application techniques are selected as topics to analyze similarities and differences between carpentry traditional tools and modern machinery.
