Summary: | 碩士 === 中國醫藥大學 === 中西醫結合研究所碩士班 === 101 === Acupuncture Effect at Sanyiniao(SP6) on Meridian and Electroencephalography (EEG) Changes in Insomnia.
Background:
Insomnia is a common symptom in the modern era and the prevalence is up to 9-12% in general population. It occurs more in the eldery. The acupuncture has more than 2000 years in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) history, and it was effective and well-accepted by patients. Acupuncture has excellent efficacy in treating insomnia and avoids the risk of sedatives addiction.
Objective:
To estimate the acupuncture effect at Sanyiniao (SP6) on meridian and cortical electric activities changes In Insomnia patients.
Methods:
We collected 70 insomnia objectives from the clinic then divided patients into two equal groups (35 treatment group and 35 placebo group) with randomized, single-blind method. We used the synchronized Meridian Energy Analysis Device (MEAD) and the electroencephalography (EEG) in a quiet and comfortable environment to record the patients’ meridian and cortical electric changes before and after the acupuncture and sham acupuncture at SP6, respectively.
Results:
We analyzed the data between acupuncture and placebo group. From the MEDA data, it showed meridian changes in Lung meridian of Hand-Taiyin, Pericardium meridian of Hand-Jueyin, Heart meridian of Hand-Shaoyin, Small Intestine meridian of Hand-Taiyang, Large Intestine meridian of Hand-Yangming, Spleen meridian of Foot-Taiyin, Bladder meridian of Foot-Taiyang (p <0.05). On the other aspect, the EEG data showed significant difference in Delta (δ) wave (0.5-2.75 Hz), High Alpha (α) wave (10-11.75 Hz), Low Beta (β) wave (13-16.75 Hz) ( P < 0.05).
Conclusion:
Acupuncture at SP6 point for insomnia patient, indeed led to the changes in meridian and EEG. We could not only measure Ying-Yang energy changes in meridians but also caught the synchronized changes in EEG. This highlights the acupuncture hand central nervous system effect. Further study is needed to establish the quantitative changes about meridian network, Ying-Yang balance, and EEG changes.
