In the cosmetics market, the most active product is lipstick. Over five thousand years, lipsticks have developed as the combination of art and technology.They provide visual and sentimental enjoyment,and are worth the value of real art. Due to the fact that the ingredients in the lipsticks may contain harmful substances, such as heavy metal or chemicals,the study attempts to conduct a safety evaluation on heavy metal testing, lipstick plate count test and cytotoxicity test.In addition, the most popular lipsticks among different countries and selling channels are selected under evaluation. Questionnaires and sensory analysis test are implemented from ZA, a brand of Japan, LANCOM, a brand of Europe, and MYYBELLINE, a brand of United States of America. The test result on the selected lipsticks, in terms of human sensory effects and their safety issues, indicated that these three types of lipsticks were all correspondent to the criteria of Department of Health. The heavy metal ingredients, such as As, Pb, Hg and Cd fell into a safety range, under 1.0PPm. The same result could be found in the test of microorganisms detection (under plate count test values 10 CFU/g).The result of cytotoxicity test, obtained from human fibrolast cell proliferation,showed that these three types of lipsticks of cytotoxicity in genetic test are harmless to human body and consumers are free to use them. Moreover, the questionnaire survey on sensory analysis tested the features of the lipsticks, including their uniformity, color,fitness, maintenance, moisturizing, durability and blurriness. The result of questionnaire showed that overall ZA obtained the highest percentage of satisfaction,73%. In terms of uniformity and color, LAMCOM performed the best,32% of satisfaction. In durability, MYYBELLINE had the highest percentage,40%. The overall comprehensive sensory analysis,ZA (PURE SHINE LIPS-06) moist translucent lipstick is favored and preferred by most consumers.
