Not only brings serious physical and psychological distress but also impact for the quality of life to patient. The purposes of this study were to explore the symptom frequency, symptom distress, depression, and quality of life in cirrhotic patient, and associated factors of quality of life. This was a descriptive and cross-sectional study. The 118 cirrhotic patients were selected from in inpatient and outpatient department at Taipei Medical University-Shuang Ho Hospital, during April, 2012 to November, 2012. A set of questionnaire with the cirrhosis symptom frequency and symptom distress scale, BDI-Ⅱ, and MOS SF-36 were used to collected symptom frequency, symptom distress, depression, and quality of life. Data were analyzed by SPSS 19.0 software. The results: (1) The mean score of symptom frequency was 11.92(SD=16.89), the top five were fatigue, insomnia, dry mouth, poor appetite, and skin itchy. (2) The mean score of symptom distress was 9.15(SD=15.26), the top five were insomnia, fatigue, poor appetite, skin itchy, and dry mouth. (3) The mean score of depression was 10.15(SD=9.87), 72.9% cirrhotic patients has no depression or minor depression, 14.4% has moderate to severe depression. (4) The poorest dimension of quality of life was the “Role-Limitation Physical”(mean=45.97, SD=47.70). The best dimension was the “Bodily Pain”(mean=84.01, SD=23.65). (5) The predictor of “Physical Function” were age and symptom distress, accounted for 38% of the variance; “Role-Limitation Physical”were Child Class, symptom distress, and depression, accounted for 47% of the variance; “Bodily Pain” was depression, accounted for 31% of the variance; “General Health” were the current treatment of cirrhosis, Child Class and depression, accounted for 43% of the variance;“Vitality” were symptom distress, and depression, accounted for 53% of the variance;“Social Functioning” were the occupational status, combined with HCC, symptom distress, and depression, accounted for 50% of the variance; “Role-Limitation Emotional” were symptom distress, depression, accounted for 36% of the variance; “Mental Health” were symptom distress, and depresion, accounted for 61% of the variance. These results could provided to medical staff to understand the symptom distress, the level of depression, and quality of life for cirrhotic patient. We suggested that clinic staff can utilize these common symptom distress as a routine to evaluate and deal with the patient’s discomfortable. Besides, the quality of live also can be improved. L. C.
