Two intact language classes of basic Vietnamese were selected in a language school in southern Taiwan. The experimental group was employed e-learning course, and the control group was applied in a traditional way with the same learning objectives, subject contents, and the same instructor. After a semester implementation, the empirical evidence was found that the e-learning class outperformed the traditional class in the competence of recognizing the consonants, vowels and tones, and in the competence of receiving and producing a simple message with unscramble item type in midterm performance test. However, students in these two classes had no significant difference in final-term performance test. In addition to statistical analysis, the grade distributions reveal that students in the e-learning class consistently had a greater ratio in the highest performance level than the counterpart did. Nevertheless, students in the e-learning class had a greater ratio in the lowest performance level as well. The further research is suggested a hybrid course could be implemented since e-learning materials serve particular function to develop students’ learning; furthermore, e-learning facilitation and e-learning tutor should be considered to help the students with lower achievement.
