Summary:碩士 === 台南應用科技大學 === 音樂研究所 === 100 === Sergey Prokofiev (1891-1953) is one of the most omnipotent Russian composers in the twentieth century. His musical compositions inherit from the traditional classical style combined with essential musical elements of the twentieth century. Prokofiev creates a unique personal musical language and establishes an important influence in the western music history. The primarily purpose of this paper is to explore Prokofiev’s piano sonatas composed during his middle creating stage. There are four chapters employed. The first chapter is a general introduction to this research. The second chapter examines Prokofiev’s musical life. The third chapter discusses the innovations of his piano compositions in general. The last chapter explores the musical background of Op. 135, with performance practice and interpretation analysis in order to gain a deeper understanding and essence of Prokofiev’s musical language. In addition, the paper also compares the fifth sonata, Op. 135 with his Op. 38. Through the process of researching this project, the paper concludes with the author’s personal viewpoints towards Prokofiev’s piano sonatas.
