Ballet is a kind of bodily activity based on artistic creativity and bodily capacity. For the dancer to perform ideally, the conditions of coordination, flexibility, balance, and physical strength need to be fulfilled. In so doing, dance injuries can also be prevented. Tai-Chi-Chuan is another kind of bodily activity that is also based on the strength of legs, balance, transfer of body center of gravity (COG), and coordination. Providing the apparent similarity between ballet and Tai-Chi-Chuan, the research explored the connection between the two, bearing in mind that there may be ways to integrate the two activities in the future.
The research method adopted an analysis of quantitative examination on ballet movements, namely Sauté, Passé, and Pirouette en dehors. The research findings showed that firstly for Sauté the lifting strength against the ground and the time of the body remaining in the air had increased after the training of Tai-Chi-Chuan. Secondly for Passé, and Pirouette en dehors, the shifting range of COG and the maximal angle of plantar flexion had also improved after the training of Tai-Chi-Chuan. In conclusion, ballet and Tai-Chi-Chuan have similar movement principles and therefore they may be integrated to explore new possibilities of performing and training in the future.
