The project of Confucian temple in Changhua was the first restoration project conforming to the present preservation principles in Taiwan. The research and work on preservation of monuments gradually started since the promulgation of Cultural Heritage Preservation Act (CHPA) in 1982. Since the 921 earthquake in 1999 caused great damage on historic buildings, the work on restoration and reconstruction was fully launched. More than 30 years passed, most of the results of conservation of monuments do not conform to international conservation ethics, especially polychrome decoration on historic temples. Concerning this, the thesis aims at issues of the conservation and restoration of polychrome decoration on historic temples. First, to understand the history of preservation monuments in Taiwan, this paper collects a variety of literature and sorts them in chronological order. Secondly, this thesis discusses three conservation cases to compare with traditional way of conserving monuments. It is found that the present administrative system can not meet the actual demand. However, these three cases have proved that we still have chance to protect our precious cultural heritage in spite of the imperfect system as long as the authorities have determination to make things right. Only through reasonable laws and correct guiding principles can make the quality of conservation getting better and become compatible with international conservation standards in the near future. 林春美 2012 學位論文 ; thesis 0 zh-TW
