Loanwords are absorbed as a part of language integration. Globalization has given birth to a variety of loanwords in Chinese and its variations. In addition, cultural influences have crossed borders and facilitate loanword development through culture exchange between countries. The major purpose of the study is to explore how loanwords results from cultural conflict in Taiwan, and to understand how college students think about loanword. Additionally, we will try to understand how participants accept loanwords and the circumstances in which they employ them in Taiwan. This study investigates four points: (1) do loanwords become formal and acceptable language in Taiwan, (2) how are loanwords employed in discourse, (3) how do loanwords influence college students’ lives, and (4) how do loanwords influence native culture in Taiwan. We propose to use both qualitative and quantitative research methods. This survey includes data collected from a total of 197 students from Southern Taiwan University in Taiwan and examines their familiarity and attitude toward loanwords via a questionnaire survey. In order to gather more in depth information, six participants have been interviewed further, to go beyond the survey samplings in terms of qualitative analysis. The participants were asked to answer open-ended questions and the interviewees were audio recorded. Each interview lasted for approximately forty minutes. The results of the study indicated that (1) Loanwords support native language’s insufficiency and help advanced expression, so college students generally accept them commonly. (2) College students regard loanword as formal language, and employ them on any occasion. (3) In regards to foreign language leaning, the loanwords have a positive effect and are helpful for students. Through monitoring, the frequency of usage, living habits and intrinsic /extrinsic factors regarding loanword usage from a diversity of participants, we can see the reflection of societal influence and future development trend of current loanwords in Taiwan.
