According to the statistics of the Taiwan National Immigration Agency in February 2012, 6815 Vietnamese immigrants (brides) have immigrated to Taiwan since 1986. The number of Vietnamese immigrants is the largest among foreign ones in Taiwan (excluding those from mainland China), making up 23.29% of the total number of foreign immigrants in Tainan city. The immigrants, now are a part of the Taiwanese population, more or less make inevitable changes to the local society and raises problems related to their adaptation to the new life. To earn their living, many immigrants run their own business by opening companies or restaurants selling their mother country’s food. The success or failure of these micro-enterprises has a great influence on the immigrant’s lives and their settlement in Taiwan. Up to now, however, few researches focus on these micro-enterprises from a strategic management viewpoint. So this thesis presents an in-depth study on the competencies and competitive advantages of Vietnamese immigrants’ micro-enterprises, especially Vietnamese restaurants, in Tainan city. Research survey and case study method are used to collect related information from fifteen Vietnamese immigrants’ restaurants, on which we’ll make a thorough analysis of their services, resources and capabilities as well as their competencies and competitive advantages compared to their rivals. The thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter presents the research background, motivation, and progress. The second chapter reviews related work, including the definition and characteristics of micro-enterprises, the development of micro-enterprises in Taiwan, the resource-based view (RBV) as well as the theories of competencies and competitive advantage, which are the theoretical basis of our research. The third chapter describes the survey used in the research. The forth chapter presents a thorough analysis of each Vietnamese restaurant’s resource and capabilities, as well as their competencies and competitive advantage compared with those of their competitors. The last chapter presents the results of the research and suggestions for Vietnamese immigrants’ restaurants to help them attract more customers to increase their profit and for Taiwan government agencies to make more targeted policies to help Vietnamese immigrants adapt to the new life in Taiwan.
