Foreign manufacturers could hardly be in competitive with Taiwanese manufacturers since Taiwan not only has mature technologies but also has a complete industrial structure chain. With the technology improvements and environmental changes, LED industry especially in the field of LED illumination in Taiwan has become highly competitive. To maintain sustainable competitive advantage and block competition from competitors, LED manufacturers often file patent applications when novel technologies are invented. In such a way, the manufacturers could protect their intellectual property rights and increase their market competition.
This thesis conducts a survey of granted patents for 17 LED manufacturers across upstream, midstream and downstream supply chain in Taiwan. With comparative analysis of the date of incorporation, the structure of capital, the number of granted patents, and the technical art of patents, the result shows that the granted patents concentrate on LED component manufacturing process/method and LED component structures for upstream manufactures, on LED applications and manufacturing process/method for midstream manufacturers, and on LED packaging method and packaging structures for downstream manufacturers. This complete and overall analysis of granted patents across upstream, midstream and
