Healthy elderly people are a valuable group in terms of interpersonal, social and economic resources. This study focuses on the participation of voluntary services of the elderly. Social capital perspective is employed to explain their voluntary service experiences.
This is a qualitative study. The depth interview is used to collect data. 16 elderly volunteers are interviewed. The volunteer service experiences of meaningful and affect for elderly adults are investigated. There are four research findings. First, the motivations and purposes of elderly volunteers include active and passive reasons. Second, the experiences and evaluations of elderly volunteers help their social participation and raise their self-evaluation. Third, the elderly volunteers build their social capital through interpersonal and service networks. Finally, building social capital shows positive results and affects for the life of elderly volunteers.
The conclusions of this study are as the following. First, elderly adults' motivations to participate in the volunteer services are pluralistic rather than a single reason. Second, elderly adults through the experiences of voluntary service and the process of services get positive changes and growth. Third, the experiences of voluntary services provide elderly adults with regular social contact and mutually beneficial relationships, and also help them accumulate social capital. Finally, the cumulative result of social capital has a direct impact on their quality of life. Social capital brings both positive and negative impact on the elderly.
