Summary: | 碩士 === 中國文化大學 === 生活應用科學系 === 100 === The study aims to investigate the current situation of grandparents’ belief of roles and well-being in Taipei City and to explore the differences and correlations between the subjects with different personal background. The study also analyzedthe possibility of grandparents’ belief of roles that would predict their well-being.
The study used survey method and purposive sampling and convenient sampling procedures. The researcher selected 550 grandparents who were 45 years old and above with a grandchild or grandchildren between 0 to 12 years old in Taipei City between February to March, 2012.The researcher received 550 completed questionnaire and 492 were valid, with a valid return rate of 89.45%.
The questionnaire used in the research is composed of three parts. The first part is about personal background information, which has 11 items. The second part is the RolesBelief of Grandparents Scale (Tai, 2008),with four dimensions, includingbeing teachers and friends, accompanying and supporting, being love and gentle as well as passing down legacy There are 18 items in the scale and its Cronbach’s α is .89. The third part is the modified scale of well-being , with 19 items comprised of life satisfaction, family and social relationship, and personality traits. The Cronbach’s α is reported as .91.
The researcher analyzed the collected data to investigate the characteristics of personal background informationwith descriptive statistics; whether there are significant differences between different backgrounds to well-being or belief of the role with independent samples t-test and one-way ANOVA;the correlations between well-being and belief of the roleswithPearson’s product-moment correlation and LSD; and the prediction of well-being by the belief of roles with multiple regression.
The research results are listed as followed.
1. Grandparents in Taipei City show high recognition in their belief of roles, in which being teachers and friends ranks the highest, followed by accompanying and supporting, passing down legacy and being loving and gentle.
2. Grandparents’ well-being in Taipei City is higher than average, in which family and social relationship ranks the highest, followed by life satisfaction and positive personality.
3. Grandparents’ belief of roles is likely to differ by perceived health situation, income source, and grandchildren behavior. Grandparents considerate granddaughters are more likely to show high recognition in belief of roles. Those with income source from their children are more likely to have high belief recognition in accompanying and supporting. Furthermore, grandparents average perceived health situation are more likely to have high recognition in being loving and gentle.
4. Grandparents’ well-being is likely to differby gender, perceived health situation, educational level, and grandchildren behaviors. Those with considerate grandchildren and good perceived health are more likely to have high well-being and life satisfaction. Those with good perceived health, educational level no less than junior college degree, and considerate grandchildren are more likely to have positive personality traits. Furthermore, those with considerate granddaughters are more likely to have high well-being in the family and social relationship.
5. Grandparents’ belief of roles is shown to associate with well-being, passing down legacy of their belief of roles is predictable to well-being.
Based on the findings, grandparents’ well-being might be improved when they are in good health, at higher education level, and have considerate grandchildren. The researcher suggests that: 1) family members are encouraged to pay attention to the elderly’s health condition and to emphasize on the quality of intergenerational interaction and positive family values; 2) related education agencies are encouraged to improve intergenerational related course lessons and activities to provide positive attitudes toward grandparents and opportunities of intergenerational interaction.
